Arrowmont
School and Shop -
The school dates back to 1912, when the Pi Beta Phis, the national's
oldest college women's fraternity, opened a school for isolated mountain
children to supplement their three-month public education. In 1915 it
began to revive the mountain crafts of basket making and weaving. The
shop became the outlet for the sale of the crafts, and it remains so
today. Handmade items such as woven place mats and baskets and even
